ONE OF THE WORST
The Celtic manager Neil Lennon said after the 3-2 defeat at the hands of St Mirren that he had just seen one of the worst displaced by the Celtic team under his regime. Celtic were recently knocked out of the League Cup in the semi-final stage by St Mirren.
They came into the encounter on the back of four consecutive victories in all competitions including club friendlies. Lennon was hoping that the mid-season winter break did not hamper the rhythm of the team, but the opposite happened after St Mirren managed to secure an unlikely victory in the match to knock the favourites out of the competition.
After the match, Lennon was highly critical of his players by saying that it was the worst that he has seen his players play. Celtic have had several high points and low points this season already. They managed to beat the former European champions Barcelona at Celtic Park, but have also equally suffered embarrassing defeats against lower league opposition as well. The poor form of the team a few weeks ago meant that the manager Lennon came under pressure. Now, this defeat will pile more pressure on the manager, whose team are top of the Scottish Premier league table with a 12 point advantage.
"That was as poor as we've played this season. We were soulless. We were poor defensively, half-hearted in midfield, and apart from Gary Hooper going forward, we were tepid. There was no leadership and I'm not pointing the finger at Scott Brown for that at all. St Mirren played the way I expected them to. I got a response from the players at half-time. At the end of the day, we missed ours and Paul McGowan scored theirs," said Lennon. Celtic will face Kilmarnock in the midweek league match.
